Do some colors last longer than others?

Not necessarily, although lighter colors show wear less visibly and require less frequent maintenance. All Staron® Solid Surface colors will provide many years of dependable service.

Note: Consult with a sales associate or fabricator to choose a Staron or Tempest color that is best suited for your particular project. Like most materials, dark colors, and particularly dark colors that have been finished to a high gloss will potentially show scratches or abrasion marks. Therefore, it’s best to keep in mind that a dark surface color and a high gloss finishes generally requires additional care and maintenance. However, if scratches occur over time, the surface can easily be resanded and refinished. Refinishing must be performed by a certified Fabricator/Installer and, typically, you will be charged at the standard hourly service rate.

How do I care for Staron® Solid Surfaces on a daily basis?

Just wipe using mild dish‐soap and water. Follow with an ammonia‐based product, such as glass cleaner, for a streak‐free shine. Visit the Care and Maintenance section for additional information.

Are Staron® Solid Surfaces hygienic?

Yes, Staron® Solid Surfaces are inherently nonporous, with smooth, impenetrable seams. Unlike other surfaces such as laminate, tile and granite, Staron® Solid Surfaces have no grout lines or ridges to trap dirt and germs. This exceptionally smooth surface makes Staron surfaces easy to clean. Staron® Solid Surfaces can be fabricated as one continuous surface to further reduce areas for bacteria to grow.

How do I repair a scratch or cut?

Scratches and cuts can be buffed away with a light duty scrubbing pad and a mild abrasive cleanser. Visit the Care and Maintenance section for additional information.

Will repairing or refinishing Staron® Solid Surfaces reveal a different color that won’t match with the rest of the countertop?

No, Staron® Solid Surfaces are homogenous, meaning the color and material are consistent throughout. That’s why repairing scratches is so easy and with proper care, it will look new.

What edge treatments and other special options are available?

There are several edge treatments that you can incorporate with your countertop design. Edge profiles, Samsung Chemical USA. Copyright® 2010 Cheil Industries Inc. Staron®, is a registered trademark and are included in the “Design Option” section of this site. If you don’t see the edge treatment you have in mind, talk to your local builder or fabricator. In addition to edge treatments, color inlays can be incorporated as well as special features such as heat rails next to stoves for hot items and routed drainage channels leading to the sink.

How long will Staron® Solid Surfaces last?

With proper care and maintenance, your Staron® Solid Surfaces countertops will last for many years. Staron® Solid Surfaces are considered as renewable materials and can be refinished to look new, and are backed by a 10‐year limited warranty.

What finishes are available for Staron® Solid Surfaces countertops?

Staron® Solid Surfaces can be finished in your choice of matte, semi‐gloss and high‐gloss finishes. Consult with a sales associate or fabricator to choose a finish option that is best suited for your particular project.

Can you cut directly onto Staron® Solid Surfaces?

Cutting directly on any countertop surface is not recommended. We recommend always using a cutting board. Fortunately, Staron Surfaces can be easily repaired if a surface nick or scratch should occur.

While preparing meals, can I place raw vegetables and meats on Staron® Solid Surfaces?

Yes. Because Staron® Solid Surfaces are nonporous, germs and bacteria have nowhere to accumulate. In fact, Staron® Solid Surfaces are one of the few surfaces approved for food preparation areas in restaurants.

Before preparing a meal, always make sure that the surface is clean. Do not allow other food to come into contact with a surface where raw meats have been placed until the surface is thoroughly sanitized, preferably with a weak bleach solution. After sanitizing, immediately rinse and clean the surface with water ‐ leaving food residue on the surface to air dry can result in a stubborn stain.

Will Staron® Solid Surfaces fade?

No. The acrylic resins used in Staron® Solid Surfaces are unaffected by the ultraviolet rays present in natural light, so its color will not fade. However, Staron® Solid Surfaces are not intended for outdoor use because of the potential for extreme weather conditions, pollutants and other contaminants.

Can I place hot pans directly onto Staron® Solid Surfaces?

Staron® Solid Surfaces are heat‐resistant and will remain stable and undamaged up to 212º F. However, high heat or flame can damage the surface; yet, in most cases, damage can be repaired. To protect the countertop surface, always use a heat pad or trivet. Or think of the stainless steel heat rails near a stove where hot pans can be placed without worry.

Are Staron® Solid Surfaces ever used in flooring?

Solid surfaces are not intended to be used as a flooring material, though it has been used as stair treads. Even then, only colors with large particulate patterns are used to mask signs of wear.

What is the advantage of Staron® Solid Surfaces over granite?

We thought you’d never ask. If granite is not sealed regularly, it can become stained,andharbor bacteria, viruses and mold. Seams in granite are also difficult to keep clean.But,Staron® Solid Surfaces are nonporous with smooth, impenetrable seams to prevent unwelcomedgerms and mildew. Staron® Solid Surfaces are also more impact‐resistant than granite; plus, curved and circular designs are easier and less expensive to fabricate usingStaron.

What is th advntage of Staron® Solid Surface over laminates?

Laminates may separate over time if exposed to moisture. Staron® Solid Surfaces are solid and homogenous, impenetrable to moisture. Laminates may also be damaged easily by nicks and stains, and cannot be repaired like Staron.

What is the advantage of Staron® Solid Surface over tile?

Tile has many seams where bacteria, viruses and mold can accumulate. Grout between tiles must be cleaned frequently and often cracks. But, Staron® Solid Surfaces have smooth, impenetrable seams, and are more impact‐resistant than tile.

What should I do if I buff out a scratch or stain with a light duty scrubbing pad and the area is not as glossy as the rest of the countertop?

Visit the Care and Maintenance section for additional information. The basic rule of thumb is to only use a mild abrasive (such as Soft Scrub®) with a blue or green Scotch‐Brite® pad if your Staron surface is installed in a matte finish. If the surface was installed in a high‐gloss finish, stick with an ammonia based glass cleaner or products like 409® ‐ DO NOT use a Scotch‐Brite® pad of any type on a high‐gloss finish.

Can I add a Staron® Solid Surface sink or bowl to my existing Staron® Solid Surface countertop?

It is possible, but depends on the style of sink and the details of the existing installation. Check with your local fabricator.

Do I need to choose a sink and faucet before my countertop is installed?

Yes. Though there are some common fixture sizes, we highly recommend selecting the sink and faucet before your custom countertop is created by a fabricator.

The edge treatment I have in mind isn’t shown on the Staron® Solid Surface website or in the brochures. Are there other edge treatments to choose from?

Absolutely. We’ve provided examples of the most common edges that majority of fabricators are equipped to build. Talk to your local builder or fabricator to get the edge treatment you have in mind.

Who should I get to install my Staron® Solid Surfaces countertop?

Staron® Solid Surfaces are installed by licensed fabricators who have been specifically trained. Using a licensed fabricator ensures that your countertop or commercial‐use surface will be properly installed and backed by full warranty.

Can I purchase sheets of Staron® Solid Surfaces and install it myself?

To ensure quality installation and full warranty, Staron® Solid Surfaces are only available by licensed fabricators.

The fabricator left me a small piece of Staron® Solid Surfaces to use as a cutting board, but I have heard that I should not cut directly on my countertop. Can I use the board?

As a separate piece, Staron® Solid Surfaces makes a great cutting board. Ask your fabricator to leave a color‐matched piece of the Staron material left over from the installation. This piece can also be fashioned by the fabricator into a cutting board to protect your countertop from scratches or cuts (be sure rubber or silicon “feet” are added to the bottom of the Staron cutting board). Also, the spare piece will come‐in handy in the event of a repair for the countertop, if necessary in the future.
